A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
