Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
