The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of case documents associated with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a change of position by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration changed course after months of trying to forestall the joint action involving a case that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.
Swift Passage in Congress
The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Earlier that day, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.
The public have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Let the truth come out. Let transparency reign.”
Presidential Signature
The bill next will be sent to Donald Trump for his signature. The president stated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.
Though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the outcry over the official management of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the legislation over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it is presented to him.
Response
The Democratic party, along with those affected and their advocates who were watching from a House gallery, applauded after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he was concerned the measure would disclose identifying details of witnesses, potential suspects and others involved in the investigation.
