The Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was interested in starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and started talking to other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but straight off told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his identity, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
