Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors are granted the right to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
